Why this exists

A surprising number of things everyone assumes about the web have never actually been counted. Adoption gets reported as press releases and membership lists. Net Census measures what is really there.

Standards

• Method before finding. Every detector is described in plain English and gated against a reference implementation before it is trusted.
• We count what we could not see. Blocked, unresolved and unreachable hosts are reported by rank band, never quietly dropped.
• We state uncertainty. Every rate carries a confidence interval, and where one number is needed we use the bound, not the flattering estimate.
• We name organisations only when the naming is the finding — and we contact them for a response before publishing.
• We take no money from anyone we measure.

Who

Net Census is run by Cătălin, an engineer in Romania. Studies are free. Commissioned measurement and annual index programmes fund the work.
